FAQs on Soy Candles & Melts

  • Fact is that candles are made up of wax and fragrance, and obtaining good quality waxes and fragrances is not always the case. Paraffin wax is an inexpensive wax and low cost candles found in grocery & drug stores. This type of wax is derived from petroleum, a non renewable resource, which is widely available and inexpensive, which keeps the total cost of the candle low. Plant based waxes, like soy & beeswax for candles are formed from plants. To make soy wax there is the conversion of soybeans into wax and is a long process. First producing the soybean oil and then the oil is converted into wax by hydrogenation. Given the high cost of raw materials and extensive production process, it is logical to understand that plant based waxes will drive up the total cost of a candle.

  • Soy was is derived from the oil of soybeans. After harvesting, the soybeans are cleaned, cracked, de-hulled, and rolled into flakes. The oil is then extracted from the flakes and hydrogenated. The hydrogenations process coverts some of the fatty acids in the oil from unsaturated to saturated. The process alters the melting point of the oil, transforming it sold at room temperature.

The majority of soy beans are grown in the United States.

  • Soy is completely renewable and the only limit is how much is choose to grow. In addition to soy being sustainable our soy candle burn clean and slow. Which means our candles are eco-friendly, renewable, American grown and carbon-neutral.
